We are passionate about increasing awareness and understanding of Sensory Processing Disorder across all key environments that support a child.  

We offer generic and bespoke training, workshops and seminars, both in person and online for:

WORKSHOP – AN INTRODUCTION TO SENSORY PROCESSING

Delivered By: The Children’s Sensory Therapy Ltd team

Sensory Processing Disorder is a condition that affects the way the brain processes and responds to sensory information.

When the brain fails to respond correctly to the sensory stimulation around us our behaviour and emotions are affected and this can have a profound impact on our day to day life.  Behaviours you may see are:

  • Challenges with fine motor skills e.g. handwriting
  • Challenges with gross motor skills e.g. PE
  • Challenges with sitting still and listening
  • Aversion to certain sensory stimulation such as messy play or being touched
  • Aversion to certain sounds within the environment.

This workshop gives an in depth overview of the 8 senses and how they affect a child’s functional skills and behaviour and the impact this can have on a child’s everyday life.

 

Who is this training suitable for?
We offer this course to parents, carers and residential staff, as well as educational settings including schools.  We can also offer this training to professionals working with children with sensory processing disorder (e.g. social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and psychologists).

Workshop – Practical guidance for supporting children with Sensory Processing Disorder

Understanding a child’s challenges with sensory processing and how you can support can make a big difference.

This workshop is designed to provide pragmatic advice, strategies and exercises to support children with Sensory Processing Disorder.

This workshop can be combined with workshop An Introduction to Sensory Processing workshop.

The Impact of Developmental Trauma on Sensory Processing

Children who have experienced developmental trauma in utero and in early childhood can have on-going difficulties both in the short and long-term. These difficulties appear across all aspects of functioning, including sensory, emotional and behavioural regulation, relationships, cognition and self-concept. Their brains are wired up in such a way as to leave them in a constant state of hypervigilance and fear which impacts on their ability to filter out information that shouldn’t be important and concentrate on what is important. This, in turn, impacts on their engagement with the world around them. Sensory Processing, combined with Attachment Theory, recognizes the need to target the areas of the brain that are the source of the dysfunction and works on re-wiring the brains of children with developmental trauma.  This can be done through understanding the child’s sensory needs and developing sensory regulating strategies that can help the child dampen down over-responsive senses and activate under-responsive ones. This in turn enables higher level sensory, emotional and cognitive functioning and allows for attachment/trauma-focused therapies to then work on offering effective emotional co-regulation, deepening connections, and co-creating meaningful narratives for young people in order to make better sense of themselves.
