CST Assessment Process

At Children’s Sensory Therapy, we offer detailed and comprehensive assessments for children and young people experiencing sensory, emotional, and functional challenges.

Our aim is to understand how a child’s sensory processing profile impacts their ability to participate in everyday activities and to identify what support they need to thrive.

Assessments are carried out by Occupational Therapists trained in Ayres Sensory Integration®, with additional specialist training in Sensory Attachment Intervention (SAI) where appropriate.

Assessment Tools

We offer a range of structured and informal assessments to understand a child’s sensory processing, emotional regulation, and functional skills. These assessments are typically carried out in clinic, at home, or in school, depending on the needs of the child and family.

Assessment tools may include:

  • Clinical observations
  • EASI (Evaluation in Ayres Sensory Integration®)
  • Sensory Processing Measure (SPM)
  • Sensory Profile
  • Visual-Motor Integration assessments
  • Parent/carer and teacher interviews
  • Other relevant standardised or observational tools based on the child’s needs

Following assessment, we provide a comprehensive written report with clear, tailored recommendations to support the child across their home, school, and community environments.

What the Assessment Involves

Our assessments typically include the following elements, depending on the package selected:

  • A parent or carer consultation, usually held via MS Teams or Zoom
  • A clinic-based assessment with the child, using observation, play, and movement-based activities
  • School observations and staff interviews (if included in the package)
  • Use of standardised and non-standardised assessment tools
  • A comprehensive written report with practical recommendations
  • Optional feedback meetings with parents and school staff
  • The option to add on a Strategy Programme

All assessments are relaxed, informal, and child-led. Our goal is to make the child feel safe and engaged while providing meaningful insight for families and professionals.

The Assessment Process

  1. Parent/Carer Consultation

An initial discussion to explore the child’s development, sensory experiences, strengths, and areas of difficulty. This usually takes place via MS Teams for flexibility.

  1. Clinic-Based Assessment

A one-to-one, play-based session with the child in our purpose-designed sensory integration rooms at the Midlands Child and Family Therapy Centre. Activities may include movement games and informal observation tasks.
If your child is unable to attend clinic, this session may take place at home by agreement.

  1. School Visit (if part of the selected package)

Observation of the child during different parts of the school day, including classroom learning, transitions, and outdoor play. We also speak with teaching staff to gain further insight into the child’s presentation in school.

  1. Report and Recommendations

Within approximately six weeks of the final session, a detailed written report is provided. This includes assessment findings, clinical interpretation, and specific recommendations for home and school environments.

  1. Feedback Sessions

We offer review meetings with parents or carers and, where applicable, with school staff to ensure shared understanding and next steps.

Accessibility and Flexibility

Assessments are usually completed at our Midlands Child and Family Therapy Centre, where we offer calming, purpose-built therapy spaces. If your child is unable to travel due to medical, sensory, or emotional needs, we can explore completing part of the assessment at home or school.

Please note: travel and mileage charges apply for off-site visits.
